The Master Bedroom… our Haven, finally.

2013-06-17 01.18.45

You know how the smart people say that you should make your master bedroom your haven and sanctuary? Minus all the clutter and perfunctory?

Well, that was very hard to do in our tiny 1950’s era “master” bedroom with our huge furniture squeezed in. There was barely room to walk between the foot of the bed and the dresser to get to the other side of the bed.

With the size of that house and the storage challenges, things often ended up piling here and there and in an effort to make the “Living” spaces seem cleaner and less cluttered, random items would get re-delegated to the master bedroom.

You have to understand where we are coming from to truly appreciate the pictures of our NEW master bedroom… one that truly CAN be a haven for my honey and I.

It feels gigantic mainly because of the pitched ceilings with giant walls that used to be PEACH.

It was a bright shade of crazy that I did NOT want to be waking up to each morning. The blue kitchen cabinets and the peach master bedroom were actually a blessing in disguise since they made it NECESSARY to get painted pronto!

I have a feeling those two things may also have kept the house on the market long enough for us to grab it too! So woohoo for that! We love this neighborhood so much and are so thankful that we actually managed to snag a house here. I had been stalking the listings but couldn’t find one in our  price range that was the size we wanted.

We had given up on this neighborhood and looked at some new construction for a week or so, and it was during that window that this house was put on the market.

When the new construction plan fizzled out, I got back on zillow and, surprise, this one was now for sale!

So back to the peach that is now GRAY! After much researching and checking out pics online of paint colors in actual rooms, I chose Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter. Lots of people seemed to think that it was a good true gray… not so much pinky or bluey. The soft gray is such a nice, soothing color for a master bedroom… especially one with such high walls because there is SO much color popping out at you. I love the transformation.  It went from being a bright, squint-enducing room to a relaxing haven.

And that’s a good thing.

Even with our giant furniture, this room feels cavernous compared to our old room. It’s quite shocking since this furniture barely squeezed in there.

I managed to slowly find a few pieces that have rounded out the room in a nice way too at Goodwill of all places.

Have I mentioned that I am so happy about a hidden Goodwill that is 5 minutes away from here? I know what you’re thinking. Any true thrifter knows that GW is the pretty much the LAST place to find a great steal these days with their picked over selection and HIGH prices.

For some reason, this Goodwill has lots of furniture… and at GREAT prices.

My in-laws actually just picked up a Broyhill  couch and loveseat this week that was immaculate for $90.

I found this interesting piece for $4.99, I think! It was not exactly appealing at first glance, but it didn’t take too much to get it ready to go in our room.  :)

2013-06-17 01.24.06

It is a great storage piece as well as seating at the foot of our bed! You may not believe what it actually was… stay tuned for the juicy details.

I also found this cute, comfy armchair there for $16.99. We had been looking for a good chair to put in here and found a lot of good ones, but they were all pretty high.

2013-06-17 01.23.34

I could deal with $16.99.

Chris came home and was shocked to find this sitting pretty in our room.

Shocked, because I had managed to wrestle this baby UP the stairs on my own.

I blame the GW guy that loaded it for me. He was all like, “Oh, this isn’t heavy. It’s so light.”

I got brave or stupid, one, and decided that surely I could get it upstairs.

I made it, but it wasn’t pretty… or easy.

The hubby approved of this new thrifted chair and deemed it worthy to sink down into to tie his shoes, or even better throw his clothes upon.

2013-06-17 01.23.23

This chair will be good enough for us until the right time to splurge on a nicer one.  :)

One problem with all the room in here is that from the door, you have a nice wide view of the foot of the bed. And you can see how the comforter does NOT quite make it all the way down to cover the sheet. I think it was my sister that recommended getting poster board to cover up that spot.

I happened to have some foam board that I have temporarily slid in there. It doesn’t quite reach high enough to meet the too short comforter, but it helps a lot. One day, maybe I’ll attach it to the bed frame up higher.

See it? Pretty unique, right, ha

I would love to do something big and cool over our headboard. I liked this idea from He & I...

master above headboard

Or something like this from Brown Sugar Toast...

…just framed instead of on canvas.

I know the cool people do it canvas style, but from the posts I’ve read, I think it’s more than I want to tackle, and I’m pretty sure I would be ruining a huge poster print and my sanity as well.

We also will eventually get a TV stand and a TV to go in here too, though I know that’s supposed to be a marriage no-no. When that happens, we’ll have to shuffle some of the furniture around and maybe put the chair on the opposite wall.

I’m also on the lookout for one of those ginormous leaner mirrors too. For now, I have this cheapo one that will get passed on to Haylee.

2013-06-17 01.21.21

Have I mentioned how MUCH we love our new comforter? It’s  a Ross steal as are our 800 thread count sheets we found there too. Ah, heavenly bliss.

The hubs and I adore our new haven and sanctuary SO very much. So much so that he has tried enacting a new “rule” whereby the offspring must knock before entering… even when the door is open.

Ha, as if. He has big, dreams, you know.

What do you think of our new room?

Isn’t the gray so much of a difference than the peach?

What would you do to decorate over the bed?

I love the color gray you chose, it really brightens up the room and is so soothing. You found some great buys too. I love the idea of
putting that wooden piece at the foot of your bed. Great job!

Such a pretty bedroom! Love that you found such great bargains, too! I hear you about the Goodwill. I’ll only venture into mine if I feel like I’m up for a challenge :)

    Great job!
