Our Kitchen… Before & After Cabinets

2013-06-17 00.12.16

This was NOT our dream kitchen moving in.

Don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t horrendous by any means, but it wasn’t exactly our style.

It never ceases to amaze me the difference some paint can make.

KitchenBeforeandAfterText.png

We got a really great price on the paint job since we got a combo deal with all the other things we were getting painted.

It took a LOT of paint to cover up all that blue.

I think it ended up taking 5 or 6 coats to get it done! So glad that we didn’t try to do that ourselves… while moving and trying to work.

It’s so much brighter!

2013-06-17 00.11.38

I spray painted the nickel knobs with oil rubbed bronze spray paint and I LOVE the contrast it makes against the cabinets!

I decided to go with cup handles for my real and faux drawers.  I priced them at Home Depot and they were around $8 a pop.

I thought that was ridiculous, so I looked on the wonderful world of amazon and found a set for about $2 each! Much better for my wallet. They ended up not quite matching the knobs, but it was good enough for me.

Beside the fridge is an odd set up…

2013-06-17 00.14.19

Not sure the purpose of the counter overhang. It seems like an odd place to have a tiny bar. We also thought maybe it was for the trash can?

We have our first aid etc supplies on top and then our Family Command Center  on the counter.

2013-06-17 00.22.27
The kitchen opens to the living room which we like so much compared to the closed up feeling we had at the old house. See the glow of the TV back there?

2013-06-17 00.23.17

See my little helper on the stairs?  :) We also get weird looks about our two trashcans, but one is for regular trash and one is for recycling. I think I need to make a recycle sign and attach it with vinyl to the can.  :)

Storage is a bit weird in here too. I’ve got my pots and pans in an upper cabinet…

2013-06-17 00.16.41

After seeing this pic, I think I need to lower the middle shelf some, huh?

There is also an awkward cabinet next to the stove that is humongous but not easily accessible. It goes waaaay back to the right there.

2013-06-17 00.17.03

It was actually much more hard to access before we took out the sliding shelf that was there originally. It looked like this one…

2013-06-17 00.17.28

It was really cool, but it made most of the space unusable. It was Chris’s ideas to just take out that shelf. Then I squeezed in a  wire storage shelf to help keep things accessible.

I love our new kitchen after some paint and personal touches…

What do you think? She’s come a long way, hasn’t she?! I’m loving it!

Do you have any weird storage issues in your kitchen?

I have that humongous awkward bottom cabinet, too. I put a shelf like you did, and also one of those AA battery powered lights that just stick on, and you push button it to turn it on— to see back there so I’m not apprehensive about using a..l..l that space. I put it on the side, just inside to the right. You have to know it’s there to use it.
    Your cabinets look fantastic!!!

That’s a good idea about the light… I need to try that. Right now it’s good for my surplus of paper towels, crockpot, and more. :)

Looks great, Renee! Maybe add a big crock for cooking/serving utensils on your counter to help with some of your storage issues. Saw an ORB BHG one at Walmart yesterday.

LOVE your spray painted handles – they look great!

Did you not like the island? Or did the prev. owners take it with them? Was thinking an island with more storage to it might be good too.

Love the transformation! I just love a white kitchen. :) Do you mind sharing where you got your “Keep Calm” canvas? I’ve been searching for one like that, but haven’t seen one yet!

I had to think for a minute, but I actually got it at Goodwill for $5. It was one of those euphoric, grab it at the speed of light purchases, ha! I’m pretty sure it was Target clearance though, but this was a few years ago. Sorry!

    Renee,

That’s a drastic change for just a little paint, great idea.

I love the wood floors too,
