Eat, Baby, Eat!

IMG_0887
Our little one is now 2 weeks old!  It’s hard to believe he could already be that old especially when I think about how excruciatingly looong those last few days before he came seemed to be.

We’ve had quite an interesting time starting with his one week check up at the ped’s.  What I thought were great feedings apparently were not all that great.  His birth weight was 7 lbs 15 oz.  His last weight before we left the hospital was 7 lbs 7 oz.  Just under a week later {at 6 days old} at his check up, the scale showed that he was 6 lbs 12 oz.  I was so disappointed and discouraged.  After waiting forevah the nurse practitioner finally came in.  She was concerned with the weight loss combined with the amount of wet and dirty diapers he was having.  She said that his tongue looked a little short as well,  which could be a factor in him not gaining weight {With tongue tie, the baby has to work a lot harder to feed.}.

We headed home and waited on a call from the ped to let us know about an appointment she was setting up at the ENT to get his tongue clipped.  After five o’clock when we had given up hope, she called and let us know that their scale was not balanced!  Apparently, they had a 6 month old come in for a check up and it showed he only gained like 6 ounces in 2 months, and after they balanced the scale, he gained 2 pounds! So, we weighed him on a scale we borrowed and he weighed 7 lbs 2 oz.  Still not good, but better at least.

{Here’s us trying out the scale on Wade!}
The ped instructed us to wake and feed him every 3 hours around the clock which means we actually were setting the alarm every three hours all night, every night! Most feedings through the day I am having to wake him as well, which doesn’t seem to fit if he is not getting enough to eat!  His wet and dirty diapers have come up, which is good, and we survived the tongue clipping, even though we are $350 poorer… since it was classified as a “procedure” which meant our office visit copay didn’t apply.  Instead the lovely $500 deductible did.  Ouch. Not to mention the ENT people definitely are not baby people.

I’ve also started taking an herb that is supposed to increase your milk supply, so hopefully that is helping.  The downside is that it makes me smell like syrup.  Pancakes anyone?

At his 2 week weight check, he was only 7 lbs 4 oz, and I was sure I was going to hear the dreaded instructions to start supplementing with formula.  However, the NP was satisfied with his number of wet and dirty diapers, and decided to give it another week to see if he could gain about an ounce a day.  This will be a full week post-tongue clipping where he should be eating well and ultimately gaining {please, puh-lease!}.  He is eating for 40 min to a hour every 2 to 3 hours, and I just do not get why he is isn’t gaining.  He is also spitting up occasionally, as well, which I would think means his belly is full, right?
So at this point we are waiting to see what weight gain we can accomplish in a week…

    Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this blog.
    It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s difficult to get
    that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual
    appearance. I must say you have done a fantastic job with this.
