Strep, a Shot, and a Shake…an update on our Sickie

Well, strep has struck our little swollen tonsilled sickie. We headed back to the dreaded doctor again today, since Haylee has kept her fever all week. She was, shall we say, less than thrilled to hear the news.
Chris’s mom, otherwise known as Nana, joined us for moral support for the ordeal.
Much to my horror, we were informed that she would need a throat culture AGAIN! She just had one Monday, and we were all still getting over that one. How do you get a 3 year old to open her mouth to willingly allow a nurse to shove a long Q-tip in the back of her throat? Especially when she has just experienced the same Q-tip shoving just a few days prior…
The nurse administered the throat torture and returned in a moment to tell us that it was positive and we had two choices.
Choice A was an injection, aka, more torture in the form of a shot. Choice B was regular oral meds. The shot has immediate results, however, and she would ideally feel better in 24 hours. The oral meds take longer, about 3 to 4 days.
I was torn between putting her through more pain and the prospect of her finally getting over this. We decided upon the somewhat tricky art of negotiating with a 3 year old.
Basically, we shamelessly promised Haylee a McDee’s Happy Meal if she would be a big girl and let the nurse come in and give her medicine on her bottom. We did tell her it would be a pinch, so she knew to expect some level of pain. Amazingly, she agreed.
Her eyes grew big, however, upon seeing the nurse with needle in hand. It was over soon though and off to McDee’s we went.
Her biggest requirement was not the Happy Meal or even the high quality toys that come with it. Instead, she was most excited about getting her strawberry milk shake! She takes after her mom.

Oh, poor thing! I hope she starts feeling better soon. I used to get strep every month when I was her age. Antibiotics never quite knocked it out (or else my immune system was as stubborn as the rest of me . ..). My mom finally tried having me gargle a concoction of apple cider vinegar, water, and honey. Believe me, it really works. It tastes horrible, though. Perhaps just having strep might be less painful! :)

Really hope she starts feeling better after all the ordeal she’s been through! Sorry things have been so rough-going this past week. Have been thinking of you in my prayers. Have a good night’s rest and a wonderful weekend!
