Making Memories

Making sugar cookies is one of my favorite things I remember doing at Christmas-time.  I wanted to make sure we fit it in this year since it barely made the cut last year.  I’m not sure you can even count it since we did it after Christmas.

It was quite a feat to attempt this year since I am {constantly} nursing or rocking my wee one, it seems, but we managed it!  It was accomplished in several installments over the course of two days… but WE DID IT!  Wahoo!  I was hoping to go a little fancy on them this year, but who am I kidding?? I used Betty Crocker sugar mix and used this recipe for the icing. Since we made the icing the day before we frosted the cookies, it got very thick on us, but it worked.

Haylee absolutely Loves helping in the kitchen, so she was positively giddy with excitement over the whole process, though it was quite a test in patience since we had to drag it all out.

Wade helped too, cutting out the shapes and sort of “frosting” and sprinkling.  His first attempt at the sprinkles was more of a dumping than a sprinkling.  Is anyone surprised at that?? Yeah, me neither.

I managed to coax Chris into helping which was lots of extra fun.  {Don’t daddys always find a way to “mix things up?”}  He took all the excess dough in between rollups to create first a Christmas tree…

…then a snowman… complete with nose and pepsi cap hat.  :)

That’s why daddy should always take part, since mommy would never take the time to do that.
I tried a new trick this year that I just happened to see on the box of wax paper.  You put your ball of dough between two pieces of wax paper to roll it out.  That way you don’t have to fight with the rolling pin, flour, and the dough. No sticking to the rolling pin and easier to clean up!  Am I the only one that had never heard of that before?
See? Soooo easy-peasy!

It’s hard to even tell, but the rolling pin is not touching the dough… only the top layer of wax paper.
Here’s our finished product….  whaddaya think??
