A Cloche Before & After

cloche redo 3

Before the world of home décor blogs, I honestly had never even heard the word cloche… let alone knew what it was.

And can I admit that I still am not sure how to say it?

But after seeing so many great cloche redos all across the bloggy web, I started scoping out Goodwill in the hopes that I TOO could be the proud owner of my very own cloche!

It took a LONG TIME, darn it, but I finally found one.  That was the good news.  The bad news was it looked like this.

DSC_0040 2

Yikes!

BUT… I’ve read ENOUGH of my favorite bloggers to know that you must look beyond a Goodwill item’s exterior and imagine what it could be with the magic of spray paint!

Before I started, I had the BIG IDEA to see if I could pop off the lovely flowered plate. It’s actually like a ceramic plate glued on top of the wooden base.

Well, that was a yes.  And a no.

DSC_0041 2

I hadn’t realized it, but the wooden base was actually two pieces glued together and in the process of trying to remove the plate, it split, slipped out my hands, and fell on my unforgiving tile floor.

I didn’t completely despair though since I figured I could use another famous bloggy tool… hot glue.  :)  {The hot glue did not end up holding, though, and as of now it just has the appearance of being back in one piece.  I need to glue it again with a stronger glue, and I think it will be fine.}

I think this was my first spray paint project and lemme just say it looks easier when my fave bloggers do it.

I had trouble with not letting the sides dry long enough between coats and then having it stick.  I also had some very uncool drippage.

Moral of the story… Give yourself oodles of dry time before trying to flip it over, and spray super thin coats.

Now if I just remember that for next time.

I love the result!!  Wowsa!

And here it is all decorated for Christmas

Can you believe the difference a little spray paint makes?

cloche redo 2

Can’t beat the return on the investment of a little bit of spray paint.

The cloche was around $4 I think and the spray paint was from the hubby’s stash, which means I got a super fab cloche for only $4!

Does your Goodwill have lots of cloches? I was excited to score another one ready for some magic the other day.

DSC_0005 2

And this one is still in one piece… for NOW!  :)

Have YOU done a cloche makeover?  What kinds of things do you display in them?  I need ideas!  :)

Any tips for my next project?

I think a bright turquoise color would be fun.  :)

Ha ha Bette Anne! You made me smile. I have not a clue what a cloche is. I thought they used things like that to store cheese or bread or something like that. I feel so much more educated today! I am looking to be a little more decor crafty this year. It is quite the difference and makeover. Great job, Renee

Ha ha! Yes, you are right. I've heard it called a cheese dome too. I guess that's the name for those of us that can't pronounce it, lol!
Jen gave me the audio link on the fb page on how to pronounce it, though, so now I can sound smart, I guess. :)

Nice job! I like to use them over plants that need extra moisture. My house is COVERED in plants in the winter because I bring most of the porch plants inside. I love the greenery, because it helps with the winter doldrums :)
